Dear Heavenly Father,

What a joy to come before You today! Thank You for Your Word that’s like the coolest, most refreshing stream in my life!

A Scripture Prayer Inspired by Psalm 1

Blessed is the man[a]
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 1 ESV

Lord, I want to be that tree in Psalm 1 – not just any tree, but that THRIVING one with leaves that don’t quit and fruit that shows up right on time! Plant me deep, God, right next to Your living waters.

Father, guard my steps today! Help me walk far away from advice that leads nowhere good. When the path of cynics and mockers looks tempting (and sometimes it really does!), pull me back to Your side with Your loving grip.

Oh God, give me a DELIGHT in Your Word that’s stronger than my delight in Netflix, social media, or anything else that fights for my attention!

Transform my mind, Lord! When I’m driving, help me think about Your promises. When I’m waiting in line, remind me of Your faithfulness. When I’m lying awake at night, fill my thoughts with Your truth instead of my worries.

I know You watch over the path of those who love You, Father. You SEE me, You KNOW me, and You’re actively involved in where my life is heading. Thank You that I’m not just wandering around hoping to stumble into a blessed life!

Jesus, You ARE the Living Water that makes my life flourish! Thank You that with You inside me, I can bear fruit that lasts, even when the heat is on and everything around me feels dry.

I reject the chaff-life today, Lord! No more being blown around by every opinion, trend, or emotion. Root me so deeply in Your truth that when the winds come (and they will!), I stand firm with a smile on my face, knowing who I am and Whose I am.

Father, help me to remember that You know the way I take. You’re not just aware of it – You DELIGHT in watching me walk in Your ways! What an incredible thought!

I choose Your path of blessing today, God. Not because it’s always easy, but because YOU are there, and that makes all the difference in the world.

With joy and expectation, Amen!

Let me share how I pray through each verse. Feel free to make these your own!

Verse 1 Prayer: Choosing Good Company

“Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me the importance of who I spend time with. Help me recognize when I’m being influenced by those who don’t honor You. Give me courage to choose friends who encourage my faith journey. Holy Spirit, alert me when I start to adopt the world’s values instead of Yours.”

Verse 2 Prayer: Delighting in God’s Word

“Father, create in me a genuine love for Your Word. I confess sometimes I see Bible study as a chore rather than a delight! Help me find joy in spending time with You through Scripture. Make Your law sweet to my soul, and give me a hunger to meditate on it day and night.”

When I’m super busy, I pray: “Lord, even in my hectic schedule, help me keep Your Word in my thoughts. Bring Scripture to mind throughout my day.”

Verse 3 Prayer: Becoming Fruitful

“Jesus, I want to be like that tree planted by streams of water! Make me steady and fruitful in every season. When life gets hard, help me stay rooted in Your strength. When opportunities come, help me bear fruit that blesses others. May my life reflect Your goodness through every changing season.”

Verses 4-5 Prayer: Seeking Substance

“Holy Spirit, I don’t want to be like chaff that blows away! Give me spiritual substance and weight. Help me build my life on eternal values rather than temporary pleasures. I want to stand firm in Your judgment and be counted among Your righteous ones through Christ Jesus.”

Verse 6 Prayer: Following God’s Path

“Father, thank You for watching over my path. I trust Your guidance even when I can’t see the way ahead. Thank You that because of Your grace, I can be counted among the righteous through faith in Jesus. Help me remember that the path of sin leads nowhere good, while Your path leads to life.”
